Wolf Moon

This year's January full moon, known as the Wolf Moon, will rise on Monday, January 13th and be full for about three days.

This moon is named after active and howling wolves in the early parts of the year.

Most commonly used Full Moon names are English interpretations of Native American names, but some are also Celtic or Anglo-Saxon.  And the naming of the Wolf Moon is thought to in fact have been one brought over by European Settlers.

Do Wolves really howl at the moon?  Wolves do howl in the direction of the sky, because by projecting their howl upwards it carries the sound farther and they are using this howl to communicate to the rest of the pack.
